The founding of the labor movement. When the workers finally had enough. Song inspired by The Fourth Estate, a famous picture painted by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo in 1901, originally entitled The Path of Workers. WE bought a print in Sicily in 1978 and when I re-hung it last year, I scrutinized it and came up with the song. Produced with Geoff DeMuth.

Lyrics

It Was A Hot Day
By r. bain 2017 Written July/August 2017
It was a hot day
The sun was overhead
It was a hot day
When the workers stopped their work
They wanted more food
And time away from work
It was a hot day
When they’d finally had enough

They congregated
At the fountain in the square
That’s when a voice cried
Have you had enough?
The people shouted
Yes, we’ve had enough
It was a hot day
When they marched up the hill

Break

The prince had been warned
By his spies who lived in town
The prince was ready
To throw them each a crust
The people shouted
We want more than a crust
We want more food
And more time awake from work
(pause)
The prince got Angry
And ordered an attack
But his soldiers
They laid their weapons down
When they realized
That they were workers, too
Oh yes they realized
That they were workers too

Break

It was a hot day
When dignity prevailed
It was a hot day
When they’d finally had enough
