BarkingGeckos

The Barking Geckos was a loose affiliation of musicians who performed my songs from about 1974-1982 in Lawrence, Kansas. Highlights include our performance at the National Surrealist Party's 1976 convention at Off The Wall Hall and a legendary 1980 performance at the Lawrence Opera House. I still scratch my head at letting this concept drift into the ether. Be sure to scroll down to the pictures!

Thanks Mister Banks [2:48]
Baseball used to be the great American pastime. My favorite player was always Chicago Cub Ernie Banks. This is the first song I recorded in a professional studio. 1979.

Weather Girl [4:01]
There was a weather girl named Cheryl something on KC television in the late 70s. This is from the P.O.V. of a poor sap who is hopelessly entranced by her.

The origins of this song are murky. We snuck into a Topeka TV station on a Sunday evening to shoot the video, which I will eventually post. video on http://mentalpudding.squarespace.com/

I'd Love To Be Rich [3:45]
I've never yearned to be rich but if I did yearn, it would go something like this. Listen to the wonderful tape hiss at the beginning of the song. Recorded in same Lawrence storefront studio on Massachussets as Orange Hair, I'm the Cable TV Marketing Man and also a stellar lost version of Patagonia.

Recorded about 1981 in a Kansas farmhouse studio somewhere between Tonganoxie and DeSoto. This is a mono recording. Fab guitar by Mitch Rosenow and engineering by Mitch and Alan Weisss. Alan rented the farmhouse. Percussion by Jaisson Tailotra nee Jason Taylor. Killer backing vox by Janet Jameson. This was a Gecko staple in concert.

Joe, Kurt, Brian and Deacon D'Bain appear to be seriously relaxed. The sheet was for a cheap B movie that proceeded the performance. Brian (red scarf white pants)was and is a great guitarist. This was during his "out of tune" phase.

The bevy of Geckettes has obviously ransacked Lawrence area thrift stores for this immortal scene.

It must be The Barking Geckos at off The Wall Hall in Lawrence in maybe 1975. Madman Brian Mckinney is bending over. Kurt Sigmon is adjacent to the Geckettes: Melinda, Linda and Eileen. Dennis Maygers' head hovers over the drums. Where did I get those pajamas?

Mike Barlow, Gecko cartoonist extraordinaire on his last ride—which lasted over 30 years. He once lived beneath a kayak in a shed out back. He attempted to go down the Missouri River in the kayak leaving Lawrence in the dead of winter. Madman Brian McKinney had to pull him out of the ice-choked river about 30 miles downstream. The Barl fell short of his Gulf of Mexico destination.
